NYLT offered this November

For scouts who are First Class and above and have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST), the council is offering National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) over two consecutive weekends in November. This is a fairly significant time commitment because it is a significant training course and achievement. The troop will cover the registration cost for any eligible scout who attends. Regarding the pre-requisite ILST, our troop hosted ILST at our retreat in March and will host ILST again this month (module 1 at Sept 10th meeting, and modules 2 and 3 at Sept 20-22 campout). The only other registration requirement is a current medical form, parts A, B, and C. Full registration information is available at https://scoutingevent.com/596-24NYLT

I participated in the previous version of this course (then known as Junior Leadership Training, or JLT) and found it to be very helpful in teaching me how to lead scouts specifically, and other people generally. If your scout is able to do it, I would definitely recommend it. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Scott Guirlinger

Troop 5 Scoutmaster Announcements – Sep 3, 2024

Congratulations to Michael Wattenbarger, who was elected as the troop’s next Senior Patrol Leader at tonight’s meeting! Bubba Hart was elected as patrol leader of the Proper Platypuses. Owen Guirlinger was re-elected as patrol leader of the Royal Pickles. Full troop leadership assignments will be finalized by Michael before next week’s meeting, when we will conduct the first module of Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops. (We will complete modules 2 and 3 on our September camping trip. All youth leaders that complete the training will receive a Trained patch for their position.)

Popcorn sales are in full swing. Scouts signed up for time slots at our upcoming Show & Sale dates tonight. Please contact Shayna Hart if you have questions or would like to sign up for additional slots. In the meantime, get those door-to-door sales going!

Finally, please remember to RSVP now for Zomboree in December (https://forms.gle/NAFsEEvcDrw2ENzCA) and for winter camp in January (https://forms.gle/T1DQAELR4Sr1HtXB6).

Thank you,

Troop Elections Tomorrow

Happy Labor Day! A reminder that troop elections are this Tuesday, September 3rd! It is important for all scouts to attend so that we can have sufficient votes cast to elect our youth leaders for the next six months. Please wear your Class A uniform to give a good impression to those voting and appointing 🙂

Popcorn Time!

Welcome to the 2024 Boy Scout Popcorn Season! Shayna Hart (Bubba’s mom) is coordinating our fundraising effort again this year.

Popcorn Season kicks off in August and lasts until November! Last year we sold $29,831 in popcorn, which provided over $11,825 for our Troop. This year our goal is $10,000! To accomplish this goal, we need all scouts to help. If every scout sold $850 we would easily meet our goal and each scout could have his dues paid for next year! Scouts can sell door to door, online, and at our show and sales.

POPCORN

There are a few new flavors, some past flavors are making a comeback, and some flavors are still hanging around. We may have some samples at our next meeting. Shayna will have popcorn the first weekend of September. So, start selling and taking orders!

BROCHURES

Shayna has brochures available now. Contact Shayna if you would like to stop by their house to pick up some brochures. She will also have them at our next meeting, which will include a Popcorn kick-off and a “how-to” demonstration by Bubba, our troop’s perennial top seller.

ONLINE ORDERS

Online orders allow friends and family out of town to support your scouting experience. We receive 30% of online sales. Sellers’ codes remain the same year to year. If you don’t know your code, please contact Shayna and she can provide it to you. Items online may differ from the brochure items. Also, online sales have free shipping, which is a great way to drum up out of town sales.

SHOW & SALES

If you would like to sign up for a show and sale, there will be sign up sheets at our next meeting (September 3rd). We divided all show and sales into 1 hour time slots, but scouts may sign up for more than 1 time slot. Scouts must be in Class A uniform when selling, especially at show and sales. Also, please plan to stay with your scout while he is selling at any Show & Sales, unless you have made other specific arrangements with an adult leader from the troop. Shayna will provide all needed materials for the Show & Sales, but can only work a few of the booths herself.

INCENTIVES

The prize sheet for this year’s popcorn season shows the prizes offered by council, as well as prizes provided by Troop 5 for extra motivation. Please review the prize sheet and determine which prize you would most like to earn!

Beach Picnic & Court of Honor tonight – what to bring

Our fun will start around 5pm at Community Beach Park, just across Oceanview Ave from the church. Please bring the food that you signed up for plus any beach games or gear that you would like. We are not entirely sure on the seating situation, so if you have a beach or camping chair, please bring that as well. Scouts should bring their Class A uniforms to change into before the Court of Honor begins (there are public bathrooms at the park).

Looking forward to the fun and celebration. See you all there!

Fishing @ OV Pier this Saturday 1pm

In lieu of our previously planned campout this weekend, we will instead do a makeup of our fishing outing from earlier this month. Meet at the OV pier at 1pm this Saturday; bring water, rods, and $11/person for access to the pier. Hopefully those scouts who still need to catch and filet a fish for their merit badges can have some good luck and get this done!

Troop 5 Scoutmaster Announcements – Aug 20, 2024

Welcome back everyone to our regular Tuesday meetings at the Church of the Advent. I know it’s been a fun and action-packed summer for many of us. It’s the beginning of a new school year; now is a great time to invite your friends, neighbors, and other potential scouts to visit our troop.

Scouts will be handing out recruiting flyers at Northside Middle School this Thursday, August 22nd for their open house. Please arrive at the school at 5:30 to ensure we are ready for when doors open at 6:00.

We are headed to Camp Boddie and Pamlico Sea Base this weekend for our sailing campout. Scouts should arrive at the church at 5:00pm on Friday; we will depart shortly thereafter.

Next Tuesday is our beach picnic and court of honor! The troop will provide the meats; look for a signup sheet to come out for families to bring side dishes and other picnic complements. The fun will start around 5pm; dinner will follow at 6:30pm with our court of honor ceremony starting around 7:00pm. Weather permitting, everything is planned to take place at Community Beach Park (immediately across Oceanview Ave from the church). Please bring your own chair and any beach toys, games, gear, etc. to share. Eco-conscious scouts can bring their mess kits to save on waste. We’re looking forward to some fun and celebrating all that our scouts have accomplished this summer!

Thanks everyone,
Scott
